Porcelain veneers are a simple and effective way to give your teeth a naturally white and consistent appearance. They are made from wafer thin ceramic that is strong and stain resistant. They are bonded to the front of a tooth, much like a false fingernail.
Veneers can be applied to a single tooth or multiple teeth to add uniform shape, colour and symmetry to your smile. They are very versatile restorations and need less tooth preparation than crowns. They can be used to fix discoloured, crooked and gappy teeth without the need for more expensive and lengthy treatments like orthodontics.
I told my dentist that I wasn’t happy with my smile and they took the time to talk to me about all the different options- I decided that veneers would be the best route for me.
After seeing before and after pictures of how veneers would look, I decided to go for it. Now I’m more confident when I smile and I get loads of compliments.
The process was much simpler than I thought it would be and the dentist made sure I was comfortable the whole time. I can’t believe the difference.
Before a veneer can be applied we will need to make impressions of your mouth and match the colour of the veneer to your natural hue. The next step involves shaving away a very thin layer of enamel so that the veneer fits snugly and discreetly onto your teeth. It’s important to understand that veneers are irreversible, unlike chemically whitening your teeth.
Some patients may have mild sensitivity during or immediately after their veneers are applied but it generally settles down within a few days.
Veneers that are properly and professionally fitted and well cared for through regular oral hygiene and a healthy diet will last for many years.
However, any tooth restoration, whether it is a veneer, crown or even a simple filling, will decay if it is neglected or exposed to large amounts of sweets, fizzy drinks, chocolate or other sources of sugar.
Most people can have veneers successfully applied to their teeth but, like any restorative treatment, there are exceptions. If there is uncontrolled decay present, underlying gum disease, acid erosion or a destructive grinding habit, veneers may not be right for you.
